CITY PLANS TO REOPEN SECTION OF F.M. 3537 AT 4 A.M. MONDAY, MAY 12; DISCARDED CIGARETTE BLAMED FOR SPARKING FIRE THAT FORCED ROAD CLOSURE (May 11, 2008) Beginning at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning, Monday, May 12, city crews plan to reopen the section of F.M. 3537 that has been closed all day due to a nearby fire fueled by hay bales.

Firefighters, along with crews from the city's Public Works and Engineering Departments, remain on the scene after spending the day managing and monitoring the fire, which continues to smolder.

Firefighters say motorists may smell and see some smoke tomorrow morning; however, visibility in the area is improving and, firefighters say they anticipate visibility will continue to improve throughout the night. SECTION OF FM 3537 EAST MAIN STREET CLOSED DUE TO FIRE FUELED BY HAY BALES
SECTION OF F.M. 3537 (EAST MAIN STREET) CLOSED DUE TO FIRE FUELED BY HAY BALES

(May 11, 2008) A one mile section of F.M. 3537-between Independence and Custer Road - is closed while firefighters tackle a large fire fueled by large stacks of hay bales, some stacked as high as 12 feet. Firefighters anticipate this section of F.M. 3537, which is commonly called 'East Main Street', will be closed the remainder of the day since heavy smoke continues to cover the roadway, hindering visibility in the
area.

Firefighters say they got the call at approximately 3:47 a.m. from a passing motorist. The fire spans an approximately two acre site used to store hay bales.  Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire; however, they say it appears suspicious.

Two engine companies, along with several brush trucks, are tackling the fire.  No homes are threatened at this time. Motorists should avoid the area and find alternate routes. Motorists should also check the city's website, www.friscotexas.gov  or updates before making their morning commute on Monday.
